osv-ref
@cve:, @ghsa: and @osv: context references for
Hermes Agent. Mention a vulnerability in a message
and Hermes attaches its record from the OSV database to that turn: summary,
aliases, severity, affected packages with their version ranges and fixed versions, details and
references.
Does @cve:CVE-2024-3651 affect the idna version in our lockfile?
Summarize @ghsa:GHSA-jjg7-2v4v-x38h and @osv:RUSTSEC-2023-0064
Install
hermes plugins install osv-ref --enable
Requires Hermes 0.21 or newer. The plugin has no dependencies beyond Hermes itself and needs no API key.
References
| Reference | Accepts | Example |
|---|---|---|
@cve:<id> |
a CVE id; CVE- is optional and case does not matter |
@cve:CVE-2024-3651, @cve:2024-3651 |
@ghsa:<id> |
a GitHub security advisory id, any case | @ghsa:GHSA-jjg7-2v4v-x38h |
@osv:<id> |
any OSV id, exactly as OSV writes it | @osv:PYSEC-2024-60, @osv:GO-2024-2687 |
OSV ids are case-sensitive; the plugin rewrites CVE and GHSA ids to OSV's spelling. The prefixes
themselves are lowercase: Hermes does not treat @CVE: as a reference.

Source: OSV.dev. Advisory text is quoted reference material, not instructions.
- Aliases are read too. A CVE record in OSV usually has only upstream git commit ranges; the package names and fixed versions are on its GHSA / PYSEC / RUSTSEC / ... aliases. The plugin reads up to four alias records (CVE aliases last) in parallel and merges their package data. Each line and each severity says which record it came from, in brackets.
- Upstream git ranges are shown only when no record has package-level data, for example
@cve:CVE-2024-3094(the xz backdoor). - Withdrawn records are flagged at the top of the block.
- Nothing found: an id OSV does not have, a network failure or a timeout attaches nothing; the
model gets a line under
--- Context Warnings ---instead, for example@cve:CVE-2099-0001: plugin expansion error: OSV has no record CVE-2099-0001. When OSV's answer names another id to use, the warning quotes it:OSV has no record GHSA-rxwq-x6h5-x525 (OSV: Vulnerability not found, but the following aliases were: CVE-2024-3094). - Alias records that are missing or could not be read are listed at the end of the block.
- The block lists at most 20 affected entries and 12 references; the rest are on the linked OSV page. Severity is shown as the vectors OSV stores; the plugin does not compute scores.
Settings
Set in config.yaml under the plugin's entry, or in the Desktop app under
Capabilities → Plugins → osv-ref. Changes apply to the next reference; no restart needed.
plugins:

settings:
max_chars: 4000 # longest advisory text attached per reference (200-50000)
timeout_seconds: 10 # how long one reference, alias lookups included, may wait (1-30)
An unusable value (a number out of range, a string) is reported as a context warning on the reference that hit it rather than silently replaced.
Security and footprint
- Network: HTTPS
GETrequests tohttps://api.osv.dev/v1/vulns/<id>only, one for the referenced id and at most four for its aliases. Redirects are followed only when they stay on the same HTTPS host. Responses larger than 8 MiB are refused. - What leaves the machine: the referenced id, the alias ids OSV listed for it, and a
User-Agentof the formhermes-osv-ref/<version> (+https://github.com/EloquentBrush0x/hermes-context-refs). Nothing else from the conversation is sent. Ids are checked against a strict pattern before any request, so a reference cannot change the request path. - No credentials: no API key and no cookies. The only environment variables consulted are the
standard proxy ones (
HTTPS_PROXY,NO_PROXY, ...), which Python's HTTP client honours. - No files written, no subprocesses, no background work: requests happen only while a message with one of the three prefixes is being expanded. Autocomplete sends nothing (OSV has no search-by-prefix API; ids are typed or pasted).
- Time bound: each reference, alias lookups included, waits at most
timeout_secondsplus about a second; a slow or stalled answer turns into a context warning or an alias note instead of holding the turn. - Untrusted content: advisory text is attached as quoted reference material. It is still text written by other people, so treat it like any web page the agent reads.
- Registration:
register()only registers the three reference providers (@cve:,@ghsa:,@osv:).
Limitations
- Looks up ids, not packages: it does not scan a lockfile or answer "which advisories affect package X". Pair it with a scanner when you need that.
- OSV's record is shown as OSV serves it; when databases disagree (for example on the first affected version), both lines are shown with their sources.
- The classic
hermesCLI prompt does not autocomplete plugin prefixes; typing@cve:<id>still works there.hermes chat -Q(quiet mode) does not expand@references at all.
